Alex is a sad, brooding young woman living with her parents in a seaside village in Uruguay. When her family is visited by a couple and their teenage son, she and the boy embark on what appears to be an awkward, first attempt at love. But because Alex is a hermaphrodite struggling to decide whether to be a boy or girl, XXY is no ordinary tale of coming-of-age. Filmmaker Lucía Puenzo?s unusual debut feature beautifully captures a wholly universal theme-that of finding oneself.
