Sarah Waters
Sarah Waters, author
of Tipping the Velvet
and Fingersmith
For women, we bring another great period piece from the United Kingdom. Fingersmith, adapted by Peter Ransley from the novel by Sarah Waters, whose previous novel, Tipping the Velvet was adapted into a 3-part BBC mini-series and received its North American premiere at the 2003 Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, where it won the 2003 HBO Audience Favorite Award.

Now, in another North American premiere for this special Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF) LBT Women's Event, comes the handsome production of Fingersmith, once again a 3-part mini-series (each episode is one hour long) that MGLFF will screen in its entirety starting at the special time of 6:00 pm on Saturday, August 27th at the Byron-Carlyle Theater in North Beach. This major event is part of a special MGLFF Membership Drive as we ask the South Florida LBT women's community to support the underwriting of our LBT women's programming at our 2006 Festival (see below for more details).

Scene from Fingersmith Fingersmith is set in 1862 in Victorian England in a time when scoundrels and pickpockets abounded. The life of young orphan Sue gets turned upside down when Richard Rivers, an old friend of her caregiver Mrs. Sucksby (Oscar nominee Imelda Staunton, Vera Drake) convinces her to help him win the affection of Maud Lilly, a wealthy young lady, and defraud her of all her money.

Soon Sue is living in the manor, and working as Maud's maid. The two young women become friends, and despite growing affection and attraction for Maud, Sue successfully encourages her to marry the gentleman Richard Rivers and fall into the trap she helped create. Unexpectedly Sue falls victim to her own scheme and her life avalanches to unforeseen and dramatic lows! Fingersmith is brimming with intrigue, emotion and mystery. Fingersmith is a riveting mini-series from the BBC that promises to keep you glued to your seat.
