Based on the real-life story of Thailand's famed transgender kick boxer Parinya Charoenphol (affectionately named Nong Toom), Beautiful Boxer is a captivating action drama about a boy who believes the he's a girl trapped inside a boy's body since childhood. Determined to find a way to earn a living, and find the funds to pay for a gender reassignment operation, Toom masters the art of Thai boxing; a butch lethal sport that meshes boxing with swooping high kicks, fast reflexes and a twist of sophistication. Sensationally and to the chagrin of his challengers, Toom fights his matches with flaming red lipstick and long fingernails.

While Tran-subjects are nothing new to Thai films (think of Iron Ladies), this compassionate bio-pic invites the audience to share Toom's life. Artfully directed, and cinematically comparable to Ang Lee's Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, Beautiful Boxer is a must-see film that intentionally blurs the lines between conventional notions of masculinity and femininity.
