MIAMI GAY & LESBIAN FILM FESTIVAL UNVEILS OFFICIAL IMAGE FOR 5TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL

MIAMI – The Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival (MGLFF) today unveiled the official image for its 5th Annual Festival, to be held April 25 – May 4, 2003 in South Beach and other locations in greater Miami. The image, which will be featured in national and local advertising campaigns, as well as on promotional material like the Festival’s poster, program book cover and t-shirts, was created by Miami Beach conceptual designer Paul Jacober of Jacober & Associates.

The Official Image, selected from an open competition held last fall by MGLFF, was unveiled before the Festival’s gala fundraiser of The Business of Fancydancing at the Regal Cinemas on South Beach in front of an audience of approximately 200 people.

"The Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival has always stood out among Miami’s many film festivals for its unique and bold creativity in both programming and presentation," noted MGLFF Festival Manager Jaie Laplante. "We felt Paul’s submission continued in that fine tradition. It’s a strong, bold, instantly identifiable image that captures much of the flavor and spirit of Miami that makes it an international meeting place for the gay and lesbian communities."

Jacober’s work is well known to MGLFF. As a graphic designer, he produced much of the Festival’s printed material for the 4th annual Festival held in 2002, a role he will continue in 2003. He submitted his image to MGLFF’s open-call competition last fall in the hopes that he could fuse his vision for the 5th Annual Festival’s branding with his graphic work for the Festival, which ultimately proved to be a winning combination for MGLFF’s selection committee.

"Miami is synonymous with sexiness and fun, so I felt this year’s Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival identity had to embrace and reflect both of those qualities, but in an approachable, enticing manner," said Jacober in commenting on the creative impulses behind the image he created for MGLFF.

"Ultimately my creative inspiration found its conceptual spark in contemporary advertising campaigns: clean, stark white backdrops canvassed with fresh, young people who playfully resonate sex ‘appeal’ rather than an in-your-face sexuality. I then integrated the typography to whimsically dance around their bodies, teasingly hinting at nudity, yet never really exposing their flesh -- much like a bathing suit that piques just the right amount of interest in one’s imagination."

A 1993 graduate of Pepperdine University’s School of Journalism, in Malibu, California, Jacober’s career has spanned the worlds of publishing and conceptual design. His work includes stints at Vibe magazine in New York City and in Miami Beach with Cre8tiv Juice. He also served as the original managing editor of the now-defunct Miamigo Magazine. Today, he has his own company, Jacober & Associates, a full-service concept and design group with clients as varied as Rubell Hotels, Miami Art Museum, Art Center South Florida, the Art & Culture Center of Hollywood, BASE, The Laundry Bar, AJ Japour Gallery, Vita Naturalis products, and the former C1TV.com.

"I am quite honored to have been chosen as the creative artist whose image will represent this year’s Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival," said Jacober. "My past experiences in working with the Festival have been extremely gratifying, and it now feels like it’s come full circle. In general, Miami has afforded me many creative opportunities, like no other place has, and I feel I owe much to this community."

With some of the city’s other film festivals making significant adjustments to their dates and their images in response to MGLFF’s outstanding success in this past few years, MGLFF’s 5th Anniversary edition is being carefully shaped and molded to make its biggest impact yet. Full details of the 5th Anniversary Festival program will be released to the public on Monday, March 17th, 2003.

MGLFF Festival Manager Laplante said just over a dozen entries from interested artists were submitted to this year’s official image competition, and that the selection committee, made up of MGLFF staff members and MGLFF’s Marketing Committee, deliberated over a period of about 3 weeks before making their final selection.

NOTE: MGLFF’s 5th Anniversary official image is available on CD for all media on request. Please contact Jaie Laplante at the MGLFF office, 305-534-9924.
