HBO AWARD WINNERS AT THE 5TH ANNUAL FESTIVAL
CELEBRATE NEW DIRECTIONS FOR GAY CINEMA

On stage at the Jackie Gleason Theater just before the Closing Night Gala this past Sunday night, the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival handed out its annual Best in the Fest awards, this year sponsored by HBO. The director of each winning film was presented with a beautiful hand-carved glass statuette courtesy of HBO.

The Best Fiction Feature award, which also carries a cash prize of $1,000 to director Mark Rucker for his film Die Mommie Die, in which star Charles Busch carried the notion of drag performance to new levels by channeling the great divas of yester-year. Die Mommie Die opened this year's edition of MGLFF at the Gusman Center for the Performing Arts.

The Best Documentary award, also carrying a cash prize of $1,000, went to Norwegian filmmaker Even Benestad for his challenging and open-ended look at the fluidity of gender in All About My Father.

Best Short went to Hard Fat, a 23-minute documentary about the world of "gainers", men who gain weight as a sexual fetish for others, directed by Canadian filmmaker Frederic Moffet. And a Special Jury Prize for First Time Feature in the Spirit of Independent Film went to director Laura Nix for her film The Politics of Fur.

Later in the evening at the Closing Night Party at The National Hotel, MGLFF program director Carol Coombes announced the winner of the Audience Favorite Award, also carrying a cash prize of $1,000. This year's Audience Favorite was Tipping The Velvet, a BBC mini-series about cross dressing female music hall stars of Victorian England, based on the acclaimed novel by Sarah Waters.

Brad Fraser, director of MGLFF's closing night film Leaving Metropolis, did the honors of drawing from a bin of all ballots cast to pick the winner of the Passport Magazine "FLY AIR MGLFF" contest of a trip for 2 to Zurich, Switzerland. The winner was Ilian Barreto of Miami, FL.

DID YOU ENJOY THIS YEAR'S MGLFF?

From new venues like the Jackie Gleason Theater, Regal Cinemas South Beach (interlocked venues) and the Cinema Paradiso, to wonderful new films, we hope you enjoyed our 5th annual Festival. We couldn't have done it without your support and we hope you will continue to support us as we set in motion planning and programming for next year's 6th Annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival - to be held April 23 - May 2, 2004.

If you are not a member, please become one! There's many benefits such as year-round screenings and events (such as Down With Love this week) but more importantly you are supporting your Festival and helping to ensure the same great quality of organization and programming you experienced in 2003 continues for next year.

You can sign up online or get more information at www.mglff.com/involved.htm.

If you are a current member, try and spread the word - get your friends to join! MGLFF is one of our community's best events and we need to broaden our base of support in order to continue putting on this great event year after year. One way to do is personal appeal - or if you know someone you think would enjoy what MGLFF has to offer, hit reply to this email and let us know to whom & and at what address we should send out a membership package.

See you at the gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgendered movies!
