Leading film scholar and theorist B. Ruby Rich published an article in U.K.’s The Guardian on September 23, 2005, describing Brokeback Mountain, which she had just seen in its North American debut at the Toronto International Film Festival, as a “shift in scope and tenor so profound as to signal a new era”. Talk about prescience! Now, months after Brokeback Mountain has become a cultural phenomenon and made history with its Golden Globe and Oscars, we assemble a panel of film professionals to talk about the impact of Ang Lee’s myth-making hit film on the next wave of gay & lesbian film. Where is queer film going next?
Will a rash of Brokeback Mountain imitators start popping up in gay & lesbian film festivals this time next year? Will the bar-raising “Brokeback” forever change audience demands on gay & lesbian film? Will Hollywood ever make a gay “Gone with the Wind” romance with a happy ending? We have invited B. Ruby Rich, Professor at University of California Santa Cruz, back to Miami (her first visit since her Lethal Lesbians panel at MGLFF 2001) to moderate what is sure to be a lively discussion, and she has tentatively accepted to work this into her April schedule!
Confirmed panelists include Lisa Ades and Lesli Klainberg (co-directors of Fabulous! The Story of Queer Cinema), Alonso Duralde (Arts and Entertainment Editor, The Advocate, and presenter of 101 Must-See Movies for Gay Men ), Marcus Hu (Co-President, Strand Releasing) and Todd Stephens (director of Another Gay Movie).
