We know what makes The Boys in the Band a gay movie. But why is Mommie Dearest gay? Or Fight Club? Or Jackass? Author and journalist Alonso Duralde provides a glimpse into the process that went into crafting the list for his latest book, 101 Must-See Movies for Gay Men (Advocate Books). Through clips and discussion, Duralde will demonstrate that a movie can be queer without having any specific homosexual content whatsoever.
Whether it’s the art direction, the taking liberties with gender, or the possibly contradictory notions that “Gay men love watching strong women” while they also “love watching strong women fall on their face,” there are many different reasons that certain movies are embraced by queer moviegoers. Join Duralde, the arts and entertainment editor for The Advocate, as he shares clips from a broad range of favorites, including Showgirls (1995), Cruising (1980), Go Fish (1994), Bear Cub (Cachorro) (2004), The Women (1939), Taxi Zum Klo (1981), Dog Day Afternoon (1975), Swoon (1992), Female Trouble (1974), Bound (1996), Hedwig and the Angry Inch (2001), The Lonely Lady (1983), and many more!
Alonso Duralde will be signing his new book 101 Must-See Movies for Gay Men following the screening.
