Looking for Cheyenne is an epic journey-of-the-heart about two very different women who, as lovers, struggle with the issues of love and commitment in the face of principles and personal integrity. Sonia (Aurelia Petit), a successful and attractive blond high school teacher, is deeply in love with a struggling, unemployed, dark-haired young journalist named Cheyenne (Mila Dekker), whose welfare payments are soon to be cut off. The proud Cheyenne refuses to allow Sonia to take care of her – and, generally disgusted with the economic pressures of modern urban living, leaves Sonia and Paris behind for a simpler existence in the countryside. In response, Sonia tries to forget Cheyenne by embarking on an affair first with Pierre, a militant left-wing activist, and then Beatrice, a more mature woman whose charms ultimately do little for Sonia. Cheyenne, living without even the benefit of electricity, feels the emptiness in her heart growing without her Parisian lover, and…well, that wouldn’t be fair, would it? This
stoic, understated movie plays out with a beautiful simplicity. Petit and Dekker create a complex, multi-dimensional, completely believable intimacy, and they have a beautiful sense of the carnality of real lovers in their lovemaking scenes. Looking for Cheyenne is a dramatic romance that raises the bar for lesbian feature filmmakers in its feeling of authenticity. The North American premiere of this film is indeed cause for celebration -
