small town gay bar

Directed by Malcolm Ingram

Miami Beach IS Party HQ, and the thought of traveling 90 miles to have a drink in a queer bar – the equivalent distance to get to Cuba, has probably never crossed our minds.

Four years in the making, the opening sequence of small town gay bar– a self-explanatory title - takes us on a rapid journey from a major cosmopolitan city to what looks like a disheveled shack in the middle of nowhere. Welcome to the heartland of the Christian Coalition, deep in the heart of the homophobic Bible belt of North East Mississippi and home to two gay bars "Rumors" and “Different Seasons" (formerly "Crossroads") who are battling to survive and create a safe getaway place for the local LGBT community.

Ingram’s interviews with loving partners Lori and Ruby, the family of 18-year Scotty Weaver - brutally killed for being himself, Reverend Fred Phelps a native of Meridian, and an array of colorful acerbic drag queens who entertain at night and keep their sexual identity a secret in the workplace are riveting, powerful and revealing.

Produced by Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy and others) small town gay bar is full of striking images, underscored by a sound track that you will want on your iPod. While it is clear that the fight for equal rights and tolerance is far from over this jewel of a film, the inspiration behind our 2006 theme of local heroes, ably champions small town spirited individuals who are fighting to make a difference within their own community

Director Malcolm Ingram will attend the screening to discuss the film with the audience
