George Michael: A Different Story

Directed by Southan Morris

There’s a lot about George Michael you may have forgotten… The hysterical 80’s hairstyles and fashion from the early years of Wham! Or that controversial anti-Bush video from the early days of the Iraq war. There’s a lot about George Michael you never knew… His schoolboy adventures in public toilets. Or the wrenching story of his Brazilian lover who died of AIDS. There are some things about George Michael that you’ve heard too much about: the public sex arrest and the homophobic backlash. But there are some things about George Michael you can never get enough of: his stubbly jawline, his swarthy on-stage sex appeal, and his eternally intoxicating music. This delicious new profile has it all. Featuring insights, both kind and catty, from fellow queer-Brit icons Elton John and Boy George, tender reflections from Andy of Wham!, awestruck memories of Mariah Carey (whose hilarious interview posture is as rigid as a wax statue), unvarnished opinions of George’s salty old dad, and adoring coos from his cute current beau, this dazzling new doc gives us the fullest, gayest portrait of George ever. Exploding off the screen are clips from all of those unforgettable music videos, from “Bad Boys” sweaty dance-floor action to “Freedom ‘90’s” lip-synching supermodels. Center-stage of course is George himself, offering a rawly emotional look at his own creative struggles, and gracing us with song after sensuous song.

Preceded by Guess who I Saw Today?, Dir. Abe Sylvia, US, video, 3 min. WORLD PREMIERE. Set to the Nancy Wilson tune of the same name, cocktail hour between this man and his wife will forever be changed.
