Writer-Director Ramón Salazar has created a thoroughly entertaining Spanish film; a camp classic in the making full of bravura, humor, kitsch, and style, all of which are firmly grounded by a strong desire to break the barriers that some elements of the GLBT community still face today.
20 Centimeters follows the musical journey of Adolfo (a sensational Mónica Cervera), a.k.a. Marieta, a lively narcoleptic transsexual who works the streets of Madrid for the money that she needs for her impending sexual reassignment surgery to remove the large bulge between her legs.
Whenever she falls asleep, Marieta has flamboyant dreams where she is the star of elaborate musical productions with big, showy set pieces and choreography, set to such songs as the Spanish 1960s classic Tombola,Parole, Parole, Piel Canela, Madonna’s True Blue, Queens I Want to Break Free, and Dusty Springfield’s I Only Wanna be with You and even an ode to Michael Jackson’s Thriller.
Among the characters that populate the film are, of course, Marieta, who could easily be described as the (pre-op) tranny with the heart of gold – she has a good-natured spirit and an unashamed and unassuming attitude. She lives in a run-down apartment with the vertically challenged Tomás (Miguel O'Dogherty) ever the entrepreneur, in a building inhabited by the most peculiar of women, including the reclusive La Candelaria (Pilar Bardem) and the mysterious Berta (Concha Galán), her loving pudgy neighbor with questionable business associates.
Eventually, she meets the peachy-buttocked shelf-stacker El Reponedor (Pablo Puyol) at the local market, with whom she embarks on an intense sexual relationship and many a cross-town ride on his Kawasaki. Unfortunately for Marieta, he is not put off by her 20 centimeters of morcilla – he actually likes it. How will this relationship turn out? Only Marieta can tell you ….. if she stays awake long enough. In Spanish with English subtitles.
