What do Patsy from Absolutely Fabulous, the Queen Mother, Sex and the City’s Charlotte and our own famous South Beach activist Merle Weiss have in common – why they are all Fag Hags - straight women - who adore and love the company of gay men.
In this lively paced documentary, narrated by Carole Pope, and interspersed with the stand-up talents of Margaret Cho - Cho is of course a shameless self-promoting Fag Hag, director Justine Pimlott delves into the relationship-rich world of gay men and their female admirers and goes beyond the soaps and movie clichés of famous fags and their adoring hags to delve into the stories of a trio of couples two in Toronto, one in San Francisco whose love for each other has endured against odds as they describe and define their uncommon relationships.
San Francisco based writers Dodie and Kevin married in 1986. Matt and Cynthia have a relationship stretching back thirty years. Dana and Denis best friends since college are talking about having a baby together. Gay marriage is also on the platform of SWISH (Straight Women In Support of Homos), a NYC-based organization that works hard to remove the stigma of fag hags as being women who are losers.
Fag Hags: Women Who Love Gay Men reminds us all that platonic love is life-altering and frequently the people we love and trust to guide us on life’s journey are indeed are best friends.
