Writer/director David Noy documents the fascinating story of two men and
one woman who decide that their dream to have a baby can only be fulfilled
with each other’s assistance. Itamar, an Israeli lawyer, and Kai, a German flight purser, life partners of ten years, have decided that its time to settle down and start a family. Dafna, a single straight Israeli musician, has given up on kissing frogs, never finding Mr.Right and wants to have a baby while her body is still able. This alternative nuclear family has Dafna’s parents blessing, as they too are dreaming, dreaming about being
grandparents.
To their collective delight, after a few attempts, Dafna successfully conceives with Itamar’s sperm via invitro fertilization. All three are
initially excited and tearful with joy, but its soon apparent that a strong
bond is forming between Dafna and Itamar to the annoyance of Kai, whose
hectic work schedule, German nationality, and lets not forget the genetic
make up of the soon-to-be-born baby, place him in the position of outsider.
As the months start building to the magic nine, Itamar and Kai travel to
Germany and seal their relationship with a commitment ceremony. On their
return, the tensions and jealousies that had been brewing and boiling
between Dafna and Kai eventually erupt catching Itamar in the middle of an
emotional tug of war between three people who are more than friends but not
all lovers.
Family Matters pauses us to think about the legal complicities of gay
parenting. Before you dream, make sure you have a good lawyer! In Hebrew,
English, German, with English subtitles.
