William - or should we say Guillermo? - Shakespeare gets a gender-bending Spanish makeover in the first gay-themed solo effort from Juan Luis Iborra, the co-director of previous MGLFF Audience Favorite Award winners "Amor de hombre" in 1999 and "KM.0" in 2001. In what can only be described as a cross between "Shakespeare in Love" and "Death in Venice", Valentín blends laughs and pathos to tell the story of an all-male theater troupe that arrives at a countryside estate during one hot summer to stage a show comprised of scenes from some of the author's best known plays. Life begins to imitate art as troupe director Ricardo falls for the radiant, boyishly handsome Valentín (breakout sensation Iñaki Font) and casts him in leading female roles: he is his Juliet, Desdemona, and Cleopatra rolled into one. (In order to get the parts, Valentín puts on a showstopping Spanish translation of "Tits & Ass" from "A Chorus Line" that is alone worth the price of admission.) Tempers flare and passions rise as the appealing ingénue becomes the object of the other actors' envy and desire. Meanwhile, lipstick lesbian makeup artist Ana becomes infatuated with the director's hopelessly hetero assistant Lola. Retaining his trademark humanism, Iborra sets in motion a chain of events leading up to a dramatic outcome worthy of the Bard himself. Buoyed by a sensational ensemble cast, Valentín evokes the spirit of Shakespeare to create a web of deceit, unrequited longing, and romance and that will stay with you long after the final curtain has fallen. In Spanish with English subtitles.

Director Juan Luis Iborra will attend the screening and answer questions after the film.
