Two startling gay male sub-cultures are explored in this thought-provoking pairing of documentaries. The Gift explores the world of "gift-givers", HIV+ men who knowingly spread the HIV virus to other men through unprotected sex, and "bug chasers", HIV- men who actively seek to sero-convert through having unprotected sex with HIV+ men. Academy Award-winning filmmaker Louise Hogarth ("The Panama Deception") opens an objective, remarkably compassionate eye and ear on several different kinds of men in exploring all sides of this perplexing phenomenon. There's the young, bright Doug, barely 20 years old, who recounts the night he was "charged up" by an HIV+ positive man, and his subsequent regrets about the impulsive choice. Another tells of his "conversion party", where he sought out "the gift" of HIV at a bare-backing (no-condom) sex-party. Safe sex advocates share their increasing frustration with which their message is dismissed as "boring" by both younger and weary older generations. And an HIV- man shares the often unacknowledged phenomenon of pain and guilt that comes with surviving the epidemic for almost 25 years. In moving past the sound-bite and gets eerily right next to your face for 60 gripping minutes, Hogarth clearly has uncovered a growing phenomenon. Recent press coverage in Rolling Stone and Newsweek magazine has only added to The Gift's status as a controversial talking point. Director Louise Hogarth and subject Jim Bloor will attend the screening in person and discuss the work with the audience. Hard Fat Hard Fat explores the world of "gainers" -- men who gain weight as a sexual fetish for others. From "feeding & fucking" to cruising the mall's high-fat fast-food joints for men with big tummies, "Hard Fat" challenges traditional gay male beauty ideals with irreverence and unexpected tenderness. | |||||||||||||
