Del Martin and Phyllis Lyon aren't just a sweet old lesbian couple in love. They're walking legends, witnesses to and creators of lesbian political history in the United States since the mid-20th century. What's so delightful about Joan E. Biren's documentary is that it tells three amazing stories at once: the little-known events of our early civil rights struggles, the impact those struggles have had on our community's growth, and the singular role played in those struggles by two extraordinary women. They started out as next-door neighbors whose romance blossomed when Phyllis' husband was away at war. They went on to found the groundbreaking lesbian society, Daughters of Bilitis, which grew from a secret society into an activist powerhouse. Inspiringly, Phyllis' and Del's commitment extended into countless other civil rights struggles, as well. Incisive interviews with such luminaries as Urvashi Vaid and House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, interlaced with rare and astounding archival images, make this personal/political history a breathtaking experience. And throughout it all, Del and Phyllis shine through with warmhearted humor and grace. Director Joan E. Biren will attend the screening and discuss her work with the audience. | |||||||||||||
