The fate of Ancient Greece lies in the hands of some very horny "locas" in this risqué, cheerfully subversive parody.Adapted from the cult comic book by German artist Ralf König, Lisístrata updates Aristophanes's classic play by putting a queer spin on its chronicle of war and sexual politics. The year is 411 B.C., and Athens is in the midst of a bloody, decades-long conflict with Sparta. The city's baths are always full of virile hunks, much to the delight of nelly friends Harpix and Potax, but Athenian wives are fed up with having their men come home from battle with missing body parts. Led by lesbian activist Lisístrata (Maribel Verdú, from "Y tu mamá también'") and her Spartan girlfriend Lampito, the women try to end the war by shacking up in the Acropolis and refusing to sleep with their husbands. But just when it seems like the sex strike will grind the war to a halt, along comes Hepatitos, the city's best-known and most influential drag queen, who comes up with the golden solution to satisfy the troops' needs: Forced Homosexuality. Will the macho soldiers of Athens set aside their misgivings and rise (literally) to the occasion? Everybody involved gets more than they bargained for in this irreverent take on the Greek myths. Remaining true to its raunchy source material (previous König screen adaptations include the German features "Maybe, Maybe Not" and "Killer Condom"), Lisístrata lampoons gay, lesbian, and straight stereotypes alike. It's an equal opportunity offender, and we wouldn't have it any other way. In Spanish with English subtitles. Producers Marc Marti and Anotnio Llorens will attend the screening and discuss the film with the audience. | |||||||||||||
