How's this for a hysterical new twist on the mob-comedy: the Godfather's hitmen/bodyguards
also happen to be gay lovers! Like most wealthy New York homosexuals, Danny and
Stephen are handsome, own a Golden Retriever and an entire West Village townhouse,
and have a closet full of skin- and hair-care products. What sets them apart is
their infatuation with firearms: polishing them, strapping them underneath their
tuxedos, and when duty calls, using them. These two are accepted and loved in
the Patrizzi family, almost surrogate sons, largely because Don Patrizzi's two
real sons (much to his chagrin) favor cooking and sewing over killing and stealing.
This mixed-up set-up gets even more madcap when extended family enters the picture.
Stephen's parents, who think the couple runs a catering business, are flying in
for a surprise visit from the Midwest. And Patrizzi's daughter is engaged to a
bookish young fellow whose parents are secret members of a far-right militia.
Talk about culture clash! Friends and Family bubbles over with riotous
variations on the gay-Mafia crossover, accompanied by clever send-ups of the religious
right, America's love of the drag queen, and that ubiquitous cinematic tradition,
the "makeover montage." Boasting two hunky stars, a first-rate cast - including
Tony LoBianco, Brian Lane Green, Greg Lauren, Tovah Fedlshuh, Mesach Taylor and
Anna Maria Alberghetti - and lush, high-budget production values, Friends
and Family is giddy fun, from beginning to end.
Actor Brian Lane Green will attend the screening.
