In this bold and moving documentary, a transvestite dad is the star but not the hero. Over the year's, Esben's secret life-long obsession with cross-dressing (first in his mother's clothes, then in his wife's) has blossomed into a deeply-felt female identity and a very public female persona. Esben/Esther is now a sexual identity therapist and a celebrity trans-rights activist. Sounds uplifting, right? Take a closer look. The filmmaker is Esben's son, Even, an angry young man who feels left behind by his father's new mission and refuses to swallow the sound-byte definition of his identity. Even's mother is still anguished over a life of lies, years after her divorce from Esben. His sister Elisabeth, though accepting of her father's transvestitism, has a wellspring of rage for her father's new wife, Elsa. And even Elsa, who's fully aware, tolerant and encouraging of her husband, admits that she's scared of what will happen if Esben becomes Esther more permanently. These riveting family conflicts permeate every frame of the film, from intimate and explosive conversations, glimpses of Esben/Esther's private and public life, and lush, color dreamlike fantasies that evoke Even's desperate attempts to understand who his father is.

A challenging and open-ended look at gender fluidity, All About My Father is also an unflinching portrait of the universal struggle between parents and adult children to understand, forgive and accept.
