Sex and the City costume designer Patricia Field - the person responsible for making Sarah Jessica Parker and her sultry single friends into irresistible temptresses week in and week out - will open the Fourth Annual Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival with equally sexy style on Friday, April 26, at the historic Gusman Center for the Performing Arts, 174 East Flagler Street, in downtown Miami. For the first time this year, the Festival will boldly open and close at Miami's 1700-seat, 1926 gem - a move few film or gay events have dared.
As co-chair of the Festival's opening night event, along with Lee Brian Schrager of Southern Wine & Spirits of South Florida, Field will highlight the celebrity glamour of this year's Festival.
Field, a part-time Miami resident who considers the Magic City her second home, said she is "happy to support cultural events that help make this place the great city it is. If I can help to promote the cultural side of Miami, I'm there. I enjoy living in a city that is home to cultures of all kinds and people from all over the world. This diversity only adds to the city's beauty and charm, as does the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival."
Schrager and Field will kick off the 4th Annual Festival with an Opening Night pre-screening reception on Friday, April 26, at 6pm at the Gusman, with wine and champagne courtesy of Southern Wine & Spirits of South Florida and a sampling of delicious food.
Following the reception will be the North American premiere of Spain's Sagitario, a film about a group of 30- and 40-somethings, gay and straight, looking for love and happiness amidst the comic urban madness of contemporary Madrid. The film features a slew of veteran Spanish actors whose credits include between them Carne trémula (Live Flesh) and La ley del deseo (Law of Desire); as well as Julieta Serrano, a long-time Almodóvar favorite, and Mirtha Ibarra, the internationally acclaimed star of Cuban cinema, whose credits include Fresa y chocolate (Strawberry and Chocolate) and Guantanemera. The film will be introduced by Sagitario star Eusebio Poncela and director Vicente Molina Foix.
Following the screening will be the Festival's post-screening VIP dinner party with Poncela and Foix, Russell T. Davies (U.K. Queer as Folk, this year's Bob & Rose), Duncan Roy (Great Britain's AKA: Lies Are Like Wishes), Andrew Ingall (Bette Midler clips talk), Michelle Lindenberger (dance culture in the mix), Desiree Lim (Japan's Sugar Sweet) and other special guests, at the beautiful InterContinental Hotel, 100 Chopin Way (off Biscayne Boulevard), in downtown Miami, with Latin fusion dance music by the LeSpam Allstars and libations compliments of Southern Wine & Spirits.
Tickets for the Festival Opening Night are: a $150 gala ticket includes reception, film screening and VIP dinner at the InterContinental; a $50 ticket includes reception and film screening; and a $25 ticket includes film screening only.
Schrager, Festival Opening Night Co-Chair and Special Events and Media Director of Southern Wine and Spirits of Florida, the Festival's presenting sponsor, said it took only one phone call to convince Field to join him in co-presenting the Festival's opening night.
"The Festival has become an important event in just four short years, and because of that, so many people from around the world are coming to see what we are doing," Schrager said. "I'm flattered and honored to be the co-chair of the opening night ceremony that honors the importance of the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival to Miami and to the gay community, and Southern Wine & Spirits of South Florida is proud to be a part of the Festival."
Other parties at the Fourth Annual Festival include:
According to Festival Director and award winning filmmaker Robert Rosenberg, "the MGLFF has become known, not only as a great film arts event, but also a wonderful 10-day line-up of social soirees and dance parties that give us a unique quality."
