Sexto Sentido
Sexto Sentido (Sixth Sense)
Created by Puntos de Encuentro
Executive Producers Amy Bank and Virginia Lacayo
Nicaragua
NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE

It's not every day that a TV series gets produced in a small, Central American country like Nicaragua, which is still reeling from the effects of decades of underdevelopment, corruption and civil war. It's not every day that Spanish-language televsion tackles such issues as homophobia, AIDS and violence against women. Sexto Sentido (Sixth Sense), remarkable in being the first telenovela (soap opera) ever to be made by, about and for Nicaraguans, is even more extraordinary still for dealing with these very subjects. This afternoon's screening brings together a new documentary about the making of Sexto Sentido and its impact on its audience, along with, for the first time in the United States, episodes of the show.

Novela Novela, Dir. by Liz Miller, United States, WORLD PREMIERE
This film goes behind-the-scenes of Sexto Sentido to show how such a groundbreaking series made it to the air in Nicaragua, how the program has evolved, and how Nicaraguan audiences have responded to its often controversial content. In Spanish with English subtitles. Filmmaker Liz Miller will attend the screening and discuss her film with the audience.

Sexto Sentido (Sixth Sense) Created by Puntos de Encuentro, Executive Producers Amy Bank and Virginia Lacayo, Nicaragua, NORTH AMERICAN PREMIERE
Takng a page from the U.S. hit Friends, this home-grown Nicaraguan series follows the lives and loves of six young people living in Managua. Produced by Puntos de Encuento, a Nicaraugan feminist foundation that works for the rights of women, youth and gay people, Sexto Sentido fills its weekly half hour time slot with some unusual story lines and characters. These include Angel, who comes out to his friends and his parents over a number of episodes; Elena, who wants her mother to leave her violently abusive father; and Vickie, a lesbian who becomes friends with one of the main characters. This screening includes a compilation from a number of this past year's episodes.

In Spanish with English subtitles.

Executive Producer Virginia Lacayo will attend the screening and discuss the series with the audience.
