If Dorothy and Blanche on The Golden Girls had ever (finally) come out, they'd be Ruthie and Connie, the real-life same-sex couple who are the focus of this delightful new documentary. While these retired but still feisty Florida snowbirds have found a way to stay together for more than forty years, there was a time when they couldn't even utter the word "lesbian" aloud. It was the1960s, and Ruthie and Connie were neighbors and best friends, both married with children and living in a mostly Jewish high-rise complex in Brooklyn. They were also falling in love. Reliving the heartbreaking but uproarious story of love-letters destroyed to protect them from their husbands' wrath, swimming together in their West Palm Beach Century Village pool, or planning a commitment ceremony at the gay synagogue back in New York, these two exude a crusty affection that is a sheer joy to watch. The film shows their eventual turn to public activism, with appearances on the Phil Donahue Show, then their easing into a position as elders and role models for a younger generation. And after all these years, Ruthie and Connie are still going strong. Ruth Berman and Connie Kurtz will attend the screening to discuss the film, and their lives, with the audience.
