Women have always been under represented in Hollywood, and lesbians are no exception to the rule. The world of independent cinema has been a better one for women-made and lesbian-themed films, but bringing a lesbian movie to the screen is still a difficult and daunting task. Where does the money come from and why isn't more of it available? Are shorts and documentaries a viable alternative to the feature-film grind? Where are the audiences for lesbian films? And is there a distinct lesbian film aesthetic or sensibility? At this panel, a group of women filmmakers will discuss these questions, what it took to fulfill their own cinematic visions and what needs to be done to get more lesbian work into the theaters (and our film festival!). Panelists include Jamie Babbit, director of the PlanetOut Grand Prize winning short Stuck and the previously released feature, But I'm A Cheerleader; Lauren Himmel, director of this year's Treading Water; Andrea Sperling, independent film producer, whose credits include Totally F***ed Up, Prozac Nation and But I'm A Cheerleader; and moderator Fran Levey, MGLFF Program Committee and Board member, and producer of the upcoming feature film, Biscayne Boulevard.
