![]() | friday april 26 7:30 pm - $150/$50/$25 opening night gala Sagitario | |||||||||||||
The amiably mixed-up characters of Sagitario wander through the maze of Madrid's cobblestone streets, guided by forces far greater than their own lonely hearts, troubled minds, or aching libidos. They might not know it, but the stars (as in the constellations) are running their lives, day by delirious day, minute by quirky minute.
In the middle of it all are 40-something best friends Jaime and Rosa (Eusebio Poncela and Angela Molina, two veteran Spanish actors whose credits include Carne trémula, La ley del deseo and Martín Hache). Both were born under the sign of Sagittarius. He's gay and she's straight, but their lives run parallel: Rosa's a frustrated painter miserably divorced from an anthropologist "gone native" and Jaime's a struggling actor who's had it with his older Argentinian boyfriend.
Enter Rafa and Juan, two sexy young newcomers who steam up the screen. Rafa is a muscled rent-boy (advertising as Omar) who answers Jaime's late night call, screws his brains out, and promptly falls in love. The only hitch, to put it mildly, is Rafa's past membership in a scary doomsday sex-cult. Juan is a randy slacker who first meets Rosa delivering fast-food paella (what a great idea) to her door on a moped. Rosa finally listens to Andrónica, the local fortune teller, and agrees to a date, though she has a few more men to go through to find her prince. All around these four, getting yanked through life by their own impetuous astrological forces, is a robust and colorful ensemble made up of some delightfully recognizable names from Latin cinema, including Julieta Serrano (an Almodóvar favorite) and Mirtha Ibarra (the internationally acclaimed star of Cuban film).
