Oliver Button Is a STAR!
Oliver Button Is a STAR!
Directed by John Scagliotti
United States
FLORIDA PREMIERE

A richly-layered and uncommonly delicate look at childhood gender-stereotyping, the story of Oliver Button will inspire young people and adults alike to open their hearts and minds, to celebrate those deliciously unique parts of ourselves that get buried simply because they're "different." Director John Scagliotti (After Stonewall, In the Life) and producer Dan Hunt take as their starting point Tomie dePaola's classic children's book, Oliver Button Is a Sissy, a lovely tale about a boy who gets bullied for wanting to be a tap-dancer. The film weaves together a first grade classroom reading and discussion of the book with a live original "musical" based on the Oliver Button tale, performed by the Twin Cities Gay Men's Chorus. But that's only the beginning. The director gracefully adds animated vignettes from the story itself, home movies, hilariously outdated educational films, and deeply affecting interviews with a notable host of grown-up "Oliver Buttons," including dancer/choreographer Bill T. Jones, arctic explorer Ann Bancroft, makeup-artist-to-the-stars Kevyn Aucoin, and author dePaola himself. A work of gentle intelligence, this is a must-see for the entire family.

Director John Scagliotti and producer Dan Hunt will attend the screening and discuss the film with the audience.

Preceded by No Dumb Questions, Dir. Melissa Regan, United States, SOUTH FLORIDA PREMIERE
When three young sisters (ages 6 through 11) hear that Uncle Bill is becoming Aunt Barbara, it stirs up, as the title suggests, an uncensored stream of innocent questions that adults might be too scared to ask. Watching these adorably confused girls and their open-minded but struggling parents come to terms with this big change in the family is a real-life lesson in tolerance and love.
