The sparks fly - literally - in this provocative new film from the directors of the previous Spanish hit Sobreviviré (I Will Survive). An oddball exploration of the sacrifices we make to regain lost love, it stars Belle Epoque's Jorge Sanz as Marcos, a country boy who comes to Madrid to find his fortune. Instead he finds Daniel (played by No se lo digas a nadie's Santiago Magill), a struggling actor with a penchant for Boy George and an idealistic approach to relationships. A sweet-natured romance blossoms between the two men, but fate intervenes when Marcos gets a blow to the head (mirroring Boy George's own real life stage accident some years back). In the resulting confusion, Marisol, a vivacious Dominican immigrant who has had an unrequited crush on Marcos, gets a chance to make her move (with the help of her gossipy circle of Latina girlfriends). How far is Daniel willing to go to get back the love of his life? Let's just say that, above the objections of his best gal-pal (played with scene stealing gusto by Almodóvar regular Verónica Forqué), he gets to put his acting skills to the ultimate test. Combining Hollywood-style high-concept comedy, a Caribbean bachata and merengue-flavored soundtrack featuring stars such as Chi Chi Peralta, and a post-modern sensibility, this film will entice even those it ultimately infuriates. In Spanish with English subtitles. Return to top | ||||||||||||
