From its very first frame, Love/Juice plunges us into that deliciously agonizing gray area between friendship and intimacy. This is the world of Kyoko, a straight girl who is an uninhibited free-spirit, and her cool-headed, protective pal Chinatsu, a budding lesbian exploring her sexual identity. The intense connection between these two is playfully erotic, laugh-out-loud funny, exhilaratingly free, and achingly familiar. The young women do everything together: they party their way through Tokyo's nightlife, work as bunny girls in a hostess club to pay the bills, go on mad grocery shopping-sprees, and squeeze into a tiny studio apartment where they share giant tubs of ice-cream, caretaking duties for a pet goldfish - and a single bed. Night after night of sensual touching and making out confuse Kyoko, arouse Chinatsu and begin to blur their definition of friendship. Even a carefree fried chicken picnic overflows with flirtation. But the real test comes when Kyoko's crush on the (male) pet-store owner explodes and Chinatsu has an emotionally shattering experience at the hostess club. From the giddy laughs of girlhood to the sober realities of womanhood, these friends change overnight, and it's a transition depicted with refreshing honesty. An outstanding debut feature from director Shindo Kaze, Love/Juice is an engaging and true portrayal of young love in all its complexities. All of us have been there. In Japanese with English subtitles.
