Five African American men struggle with the impact of HIV and AIDS on their lives in this important new work of dramatic fiction, brimming with humor and compassion. The men form tenuous and wary bonds when each of them joins a regular discussion group at the local center, called "Kevin's Room." There's Paris, wise-cracking and full of bravado; Pharaoh, smoldering in his open sensuality; and Teddy, who's impending marriage to a woman is threatened by the revelation of his homosexuality. In the end, Kevin's Room is unusual for its candor and its realistic portrayal of the black gay experience.

Executive producer Lora Branch will attend the screening and discuss the film with the audience.

his beautiful and moving new film chronicles the complex relationship between two heroes of the South African gay and lesbian rights movement, one of the most vibrant and successful on the continent. Bev Ditsie, a lesbian singer and activist, narrates the story and uses her own haunting melodies to illuminate her never easy bond of friendship with Simon Nkoli, a world-famous anti-apartheid leader who died of AIDS in 1998. Told through home movies, news footage and family interviews, Bev's harrowing tale of coming out in the black ghetto township of Soweto in the1980s unfolds concurrently with the older Simon's very public political battles, his arrest, and his startling in-prison announcement of his homosexuality. With the collapse of the racist system, these two fierce characters became pivotal leaders in a remarkable movement for the inclusion of sexual orientation in South Africa's new constitution.
