Lesbians and gay men have been uniquely denied access to our history, to our forefathers and foremothers, by the potentially "passing" nature of same-sex love and the previous tyranny of the closet. As gay culture has come out into the open over the past decades, the heroines and heroes who have been in our midst all along have begun to get their due.

This year's Festival includes a number of films that celebrate and restore to their rightful place in history some long-time community leaders and pioneers, from Ruthie and Connie to Simon and I to Harry Hay in Hope Along the Wind. What makes someone a heroine or hero? Why do big historic changes, like the last few decades increasing openness towards homosexuality, take place, and how do individuals affect this transformation? How do filmmakers capture the personal stories and the historical sweep of the past in their documentaries? This panel brings together a number of Festival guests to discuss these questions and the film projects they have beeen involved with.

Panelists include writer and activist Joan Nestle, profiled in panelist Joyce Warshow's Hand on the Pulse; Eric Slade, director of Hope Along the Wind; David Weissman, co-director of The Cockettes; and moderator Robert Rosenberg, MGLFF Director and independent filmmaker (Before Stonewall).
