Embarking from Alja's family village, where she is already spending a languid summer, they leave behind the civilized urban world for something different: the dense and magical rural domain of the forest and the farmers, of unblemished nature and firmly held prejudices. The women ignore the warnings that a killer may be loose in the woods, flaunting danger as they sunbathe and swim topless along the river. As Zana and Alja grow sexually more intimate in a flirtatious erotic dance, Simona embraces the darker side of her (hetero)sexuality. On one level, the film is about Slovenia itself which, after the breakup of Yugoslavia, fought a violent war with its neighbor, Croatia. The river has become the border between the two new countries, and for the three young women a border between what is permissible and what is forbidden. On another level, it is an immensely satisfying female version of Deliverance, a surreal and riveting allegory about the risks of unfettered women's sexuality in what is ultimately still a man's world.
