Food of Love
Food of Love
Directed by Ventura Pons
Germany/Spain
U.S. PREMIERE

Paul is an aspiring musician on the edge of adulthood. He's smitten in that unarticulated young-crush way with his idol, Richard Kennington, a handsome concert pianist who's pushing forty. At a one-time gig as Kennington's page turner at a concert in San Francisco, Paul unknowingly attracts the pianist's attention, as well as that of Mansourian, Kennington's older manager and long-time companion. This subtle comedy of manners follows Paul, a good year later, and his mother, recently dumped by Paul's father for a younger woman, to Barcelona and on to a chance meeting with the object of Paul's burning adoration. Based on the novel The Page Turner by the award-winning novelist David Leavitt (The Lost Language of Cranes, Family Dancing), the film takes us through the twists of a plot that includes a steamy affair, a deceived mother and a suspicious lover. Back in New York, with Paul now enrolled at the Julliard School of Music and openly gay, the darkly comic story has a few more turns to take, as jealousy, desire and that persistent mother all conspire to snare Paul in a complex web. Food of Love, the first English language film from Spain's renowned director Ventura Pons, is a lovely meditation on ambition, deception and the games gay men play. With stand-out performances from Juliet Stevenson (Truly Madly Deeply, Drowning by Numbers), Paul Rhys (Chaplin, Vincent and Theo) and newcomer Kevin Bishop.

A 2002 Berlin Film Festival selection.

Director Ventura Pons will attend the screening and discuss his film with the audience.
