Daddy & PapaThis year, for the first time, we are designating a whole afternoon as Family Day at the Miami Gay & Lesbian Film Festival, with two film programs and activities at and around the Colony Theatre on Lincoln Road. Beginning at noon, Saturday May 4, we will have balloons, child-friendly refreshments and the like available for free and encourage all kinds of families and adults with children to come and spend time with us. Gay, lesbian and straight adults are all welcome to attend with daughters, sons, nieces, nephews or just a good younger friend in tow!

The films which we are showcasing this year all deal with issues of growing up and raising children. They are:

saturday may 4 1:00 pm
Oliver Button Is a STAR!

The classic children's book, Oliver Button Is a Sissy, a lovely tale about a boy who gets bullied for wanting to be a tap-dancer, is the central focus of this film that uses animation, classroom discussion and musical numbers.

No Dumb Questions
Three young sisters (ages 6 through 11) face the fact that Uncle Bill is becoming Aunt Barbara, with tolerance, love and a whole lot of smart questions.

saturday may 4 3:00 pm
Daddy & Papa

A beautifully personal and informative film that looks at gay men becoming fathers, raising children and trying to change laws that don't support their kind of families.

Naming Prairie & Celebration
A lesbian baby-naming ceremony and a young boy that gets an enthusiastic response to his simple announcement make up these two short gems.

No Dumb Questions

Filmmakers from some of the films, who are gay parents themselves, will be there to lead a discussion after each program, in which young people will be encouraged to participate. Both the 1 PM and 3 PM programs are definitely appropriate for those ten and up; they are mostly documentaries and may not hold the attention of younger children, but we leave that to your discretion.

Naming Prairie Children under 10 will be admitted free to the theater. For adults who wish to see the films without their younger children, we will provide professional childcare at no cost for those between the ages of 2 through 10 at Happy Kids Day Care Center, 1700 Jefferson Avenue, three blocks from the Colony Theatre. Making a reservation in advance will guarantee a slot; call our office at 305-534-9924.

Other programs at this year's Festival are also appropriate for younger viewers accompanied by an adult or for older teenagers on their own, but some of the films are strictly adult affairs. Most of the films we screen are unrated because they are so new or are not in commercial release in the United States, so please read the descriptions carefully. Don't hesitate to call the Festival at 305-534-9924 if you have any questions about which films are best for your particular family, however you define it.
