Filmmaker Johnny Symons hears his "non-biological clock" ticking. But for his partner William, the alarm has already gone off. And so begins the adventure of gay fatherhood that is the centerpiece of this insightful and inspiring documentary fresh from this year's Sundance Film Festival. With Symons' affably ironic narration as a guide, we follow the couple through the adoption maze, from the discomforting process of "catalog baby shopping" to the jolting discovery that the foster mother of the child they want is a conservative fundamentalist. Seamlessly interwoven throughout are other, equally compelling tales of gay fatherhood. There is the thoughtful and candid girl who struggles with her gay dads' "divorce" but has no issue with their homosexuality. A single man joyfully adopts two brothers on his own yet acknowledges his loneliness without a partner. And one father, right here in Miami, struggles to permanently keep the foster child he has come to love against the force of Florida's homophobic anti-adoption laws, a chilling reminder of the uphill battle gay parents continue to face. Symons' gently insistent attention to larger issues that surround the stories - from racism to gender stereotyping - is a testament to his filmmaking wisdom. Director Johnny Symons will attend the screening and discuss the film with the audience. Preceded by Celebration, Dir.
