Dirk Shafer's (Man of the Year) hallucinatory new film finds the soul of the circuit and seeks redemption in the soul of everyone who dances, drugs and screws their way across the screen. The film revolves around John, a hunky but closeted small-town cop, who is harassed and attacked by his fellow officers when they find out he is gay. In a disco heartbeat he moves to Los Angeles and in with his filmmaker cousin Tad. At first resistant, he is soon unable to escape the allure of beautiful men and chemical enhancement, and gets ever more pumped up and strung out as he joins the circuit tribe. His new buddy Hector, a strikingly handsome high priced hustler in his late twenties, already finds himself going over the hill of faded youth and fast-lane partying. Bobby's viral load is undetectable, but high-class sex shows and circuit appearances keep paying the bills. And even as Tad makes his documentary exposing the underside of the circuit scene, he himself is tweaking, going out, and dating a new-age-aphorism-spouting DJ. Added to the mix are the exploitative club owners, a scary straight couple played by cult figures William Katt and Nancy Allen (Carrie, Dressed to Kill), and John's innocent but loyal roommate Nina. With its throbbing soundtrack, shirtless dancers and muscle-boy sex scenes, Circuit may seem like it's one big high, but the searing script, sharply drawn characters and visceral emotional resonance create a sober and cautionary tale. Director Dirk Shafer will attend the screening and discuss his film with the audience. Return to top | ||||||||||||
